I would learn letters before learning shortcut signs, so if you can’t remember a sign you can fingerspell the word.
What’s the best resource? YouTube?
YouTube is a good resource! Handspeak.com, signingsavvy.com, and lifeprint.com are all great resources as well. You should try to use resources from the Deaf community because those are the most accurate.
I’d recommend learning basic signs alongside fingerspelling too! You could look up “most common words in ASL”.
For example: https://www.handspeak.com/word/most-used/
